I love learning through doing, and 'm trying to backfill my portfolio with some things I'm really proud of. To me, the most important piece of furniture in the house is the dining room table. It's where meals are shared with family every day, friends on special (and not so special) occasions, homework is done, and the mail gets dropped.
Building this table really stretched my woodworking abilities, and was a really fun project. Although I don't have a jointer, I was able to follow some youTube tutorials to use my table saw to put finish edges on some rough-cut some cherry I found in the back of a flee market. Each board took about 45 minutes of work on the table saw before it was ready to be glued up. I also used a biscuit joiner to help align each board and get a nice, flat finish.
I wish I could say I welded the base myself, and I had plans to work on it at my friend Andrew's fabrication shop up in Longmont... but ultimately after months without a kitchen table, we decided the project just needed to get finished. I ended up ordering the legs from Symmetry Hardware in Portland. I was pleased with how they turned out.
